Attorney General pressured to resign after Mexican money laundering operation

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – A Louisiana congressman on Tuesday became the 56th member of Congress to demand that Attorney General Eric Holder resign amid revelations that U.S. law enforcement agents participated in a money laundering scheme in Mexico.
Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) said in a statement, “The nation’s chief law enforcement officer has created a highly politicized atmosphere at the Department of Justice, and the time has come for him to resign or be fired.”
Other members of Congress say they will follow up with more hearings to investigate the Justice Department.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said he would hold a hearing soon on the Justice Department operation intended to track profits from illegal drug sales.
He wrote a letter recently to Holder that said, “The existence of such a program again calls your leadership into question. The managerial structure you have implemented lacks appropriate operational safeguards to prevent the implementation of such dangerous schemes. The consequences have been disastrous.”
He was referring to a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) operation that used undercover agents to help Mexican drug cartels pick up or deposit money into bank accounts, then wire it to gang leaders or legitimate businesses that provide services for the cartels.
The purpose of the operation was to discover how the money was transferred and track it to cartel leaders so they could be arrested and their drug operations shut down.
However, the undercover operation also assisted the cartels, according to critics of the DEA.
Issa said secret operations such as the money laundering surveillance were banned by the Mexican government in 1998 after U.S. agents conducted one without notifying Mexican authorities.
The DEA responded with a statement saying, “The DEA has well-established mechanisms for coordinating and approving activities associated with the fight against money laundering. As a result of this cooperation, DEA has seized illicit transnational criminal organization money all around the world through our partnership with law enforcement.”
The DEA also said it undertook the operation with support from the Mexican government.
“As part of that collaboration, DEA works with Mexican authorities to gather and use information about these criminal organizations to counter the threats they pose to both of our countries,” the statement said.
The money laundering operation was first reported by The New York Times last week. It comes at a time Congress is investigating another controversial U.S. law enforcement effort in Mexico called Operation Fast and Furious.
Agents involved in the operation in 2009 and 2010 allowed drug cartel members to purchase guns illegally in the United States then carry them over the border to Mexico.
The U.S. agents intended to track the guns to drug cartel leaders and eventually arrest them or shut down their smuggling routes.
However, the U.S. agents were unable to follow as many as 2,000 of the guns, some of which were used in murders of police and civilians.
Republicans in Congress are complaining the most about Holder’s failure to control the undercover maneuvers. So far, President Barack Obama has given no hint he would replace him.
Holder has said he was unaware of the extent of the operations by the agencies that conducted them.
A House Judiciary Committee hearing Friday where Holder was questioned about his role in the operations was covered extensively in the Mexican news media.
“I have no intention of resigning,” Holder told the congressmen. “I’m the attorney general who put an end to these misguided tactics.”
He denied accusations that the Justice Department might be withholding information from Congress for a cover-up.
The Justice Department’s cooperation with investigators has been “unprecedented” and “responsive.”
“We have not withheld any documents that are responsive,” he said.
His harshest critics included Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), who asked, “Tell me what’s the difference between lying and misleading Congress, in this context?”
He also said, “Some heads should roll.”
