Gingrich surges in new polls

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Newt Gingrich is rising among the GOP presidential field, two new public opinion polls released Tuesday show.
The Washington Post/ABC News survey in Iowa shows Gingrich garnering 33 percent of the support among likely GOP caucus-goers, placing him well ahead of Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, who are at 15 percent.
The results follow similar findings by The Des Moines Register’s Iowa Poll and the NBC/Marist Poll.
In another key early voting state, Gingrich leads Romney by nearly 17 percentage points in a new South Carolina poll by Winthrop University. Rick Perry is a distant third.
While the new polls are encouraging for Gingrich, reports note the need for Gingrich to overcome fundraising hurdles and hushed concerns raised among some Republicans about his leadership.
Through the end of September, Gingrich has raised $2.9 million and had about $353,000 in the bank, plus $1.1 million in debts, according to his campaign finance reports,
Romney, in comparison, raised $32.2 million through the end of September, and had banked about $14.7 million, with no debt.
What also may be a hindrance for Gingrich are quotes from leading conservatives that say the former speaker’s leadership is oftentimes “lacking.”
