India, China Close To N-Deal As China Popularity Declines In Asia
Tokyo, Japan (AHN) – Japan’s popularity is apparently rising in the Asian region against China especially with developing power India, as a civilian nuclear deal between Tokyo and New Delhi is in the cards. The two nations are also likely to work on boosting trade relations between them.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is on a three-day official visit to Japan, said Sunday he is confident of reaching an agreement on a civil nuclear deal with his Japanese counterpart, Naoto Kan, describing the deal as a win-win proposition for both the countries.
India sees Japan as a partner in nuclear energy since its Southeast Asian friend has one of the most advanced nuclear technologies.
Energy-hungry India has signed an atomic civilian cooperation agreement with superpower Japan under which Tokyo agreed to provide nuclear power generation technology to New Delhi. However, Japan said it would halt its cooperation if the South Asian giant conducted any new nuclear tests.
Responding to the warning, Singh clarified that India had no intention to reconsider its commitment, adding that India had unilaterally declared a moratorium on explosive testing.
India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which has deprived it from getting nuclear cooperation from several countries including the United States and Japan in past decades.
The two leaders are also expected to reach a deal on an economic partnership agreement, under which Japanese firms will get access to Indian markets. “I attach great importance to the potential of the economic cooperation,” Singh said, adding that he hoped the pact would boost their trade and economic ties many-fold.
Singh’s visit came at a time when relations between Japan and China are at an all-time low over a trawler collision incident, prompting Beijing to scrap all diplomatic talks and civilian programs. China has also suspended exports of rare earth minerals vital for Japan’s high-tech industries. India immediately grabbed this opportunity and offered cooperation to Japan on the production of rare earth minerals in India.
China’s popularity in the Asian region, especially with India, continues to decline after New Delhi recently announced India would not revise defense relations with Beijing that were suspended in July over Beijing’s long-held position on Jammu and Kashmir.
Sino-Indian leaders are expected to take on this issue during their meeting in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi later this week. China’s new practice of issuing visas on loose sheets instead of passports to persons from Jammu and Kashmir as well as their boundary dispute will be high on the agenda.
