EU Ready To Grant Visa-Free Travel To Ukraine On Conditions
Brussels, Belgium (AHN) – The European Union has asked Ukraine to improve its human rights records and vowed to grant visa-free travel rights for its citizens in return. European Commission Chief Jose Manuel Barroso and EU President Herman Van Rompuy presented the offer to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych during the Brussels summit on Monday.
Under the action plan, the EU called on Ukraine to improve their asylum policies, migration and border control. Kiev was also urged to protect the travel documents in a bid to prevent forgeries.
Barroso assured Yanukovych about the EU’s support and commitment to build friendly relations with Ukraine.
Talking to Ukrainian leader, the EU’s executive arm’s head said that the pace and depth of this rapprochement would depend on how Kiev upholds the EU principles on democracy. “We will work towards a deep and comprehensive free trade area. It will encompass increased mobility with the goal of establishing a visa-free regime,” Barroso said.
“And I’m very pleased that we have agreed that we are launching an action plan for Ukraine towards establishment of a visa-free regime for short-stay travel,” he added. Barroso also hinted the possibility of an association agreement with Ukraine by the middle of next year.
Referring to such associations, Van Rompuy said they were economic as well as political. “As our relationship is based on shared values, the quality and the depths of it is directly linked to the quality of democracy and reforms in Ukraine. And the EU stands ready to support Ukraine in her reforms,” the EU president said.
