Developing: U.S. On Alert After Inbound Packages Contained Explosives
Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – American authorities say packages intercepted overseas contained explosives destined for the United States. President Barack Obama was alerted late Thursday night, according to the White House, and ordered security officials to be on alert.
“Last night, intelligence and law enforcement agencies discovered potential suspicious packages on two planes in transit to the United States,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said. Based on close cooperation among U.S. government agencies and with our foreign allies and partners, authorities were able to identify and examine two suspicious packages, one in East Midlands, United Kingdom and one in Dubai.”
“Both of these packages originated from Yemen. As a result of security precautions triggered by this threat, the additional measures were taken regarding the flights at Newark Liberty and Philadelphia International Airports,” Gibbs added.

France Raises Retirement Age To Cut Pension Costs
Paris, France (AHN) – Defying trade union threats, the French Senate on Friday approved an increase in the country’s retirement age from 60 to 62 in an effort to reduce pension costs. Union leaders are expected to protest the move and called a national strike on October 16.
Parliament’s Lower House has already supported the reform, but it will not go into affect until the Upper House approves it.
The government hopes that the reform will be fully approved by the end of this month. If the proposal gets the approval, the employees will not be able to qualify for state pension until they work for a minimum of 41.5 years.
The government is endorsing the reforms in a bid to reduce country’s lending levels, which sharply increased in the wake of global financial crisis.
Currently, French budget deficit stands at 7 percent of GDP, which is far beyond the prescribed 3 percent as per European Union norms. However, it is much lower compared to its EU members – U.K., Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.

High Cost Loan Limits Extended
The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives passed legislation that extends the current conforming loan limits through the new fiscal year. High-cost loan limits as high as $729,750 were set to expire Sept. 30 — the end of the government’s fiscal year. “Extending the existing limits is essential to helping borrowers continue to have access to affordable long-term, fixed-rate mortgage credit in today’s struggling economy,” the chairman of the Mortgage Bankers Association Chairman said in a news release.
