Britain’s Budget Office Forecasts Inflation To Outpace Income Growth
London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Britain’s Office for Budget Responsibility warned Monday that the country’s inflation rate would likely outpace income growth over the next two years.
The OBR forecasts 2011 inflation rate at 2.8 percent, while average earnings will rise by only 2.2 percent. The higher Consumer Price Index outlook is based on significant increases in food prices and household energy bills since summer.
However, by 2012 the OBR foresees a slight improvement in the financial situation with inflation likely slowing to 1.9 percent, while average earnings would rise by 2.4 percent.
Despite the bleak OBR outlook, Chancellor George Osborne said the British coalition government would still go ahead with spending cuts, tax hikes and austerity measures that would have an impact on economic recovery if export weakens and unemployment rises faster than expected.
Osborne is still optimistic that Britain can avoid a double-dip recession in 2011 and achieve a growth rate of 1.8 percent this year. He told MPs that while there is uncertainty, Britain’s recovery is on track and 1 million jobs are still expected to be created by the private sector as a result of the recovery.

Applied Materials earnings surge in fourth quarter
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Applied Materials Inc. reported a sharp jump in sales and earnings for the fourth fiscal quarter on Wednesday, beating Wall Street’s expectations. For the period ended Oct. 31, Applied Materials said net income was $468 million, or 35 cents a share, compared with net income of $138 million, or 10 cents per share, for the same period last year. On a non-GAAP basis, the company said it earned $476 million, or 36 cents a share, for the recent period. Revenue jumped 89% to $2.89 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of 31 cents a share on $2.6 billion in revenue, according to consensus estimates from FactSet Research.

Net income in the three months to October 2 fell to $835-million, or 43 cents per share, to $895-million, or 47 cents per share, a year earlier.
Factoring out one-time items, adjusted earnings came to 45 cents per share, down from 46 cents a year ago and a penny below the forecast of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
Shares dropped $1.12, or 3 percent, to $35.87 after the earnings were released. They came out surprisingly early, about 15 minutes before their usual release at the minute the market closes. In aftermarket trading, they gained 7 cents.
Revenue fell 1 percent to $9.74-billion from $9.87-billion a year ago. That also fell short of forecasts of $9.94-billion.
Advertising revenue rose at ESPN and ABC but the one fewer week tamped down the results.
Parks and resorts revenue fell 1 percent as fewer people closed on Disney Vacation Club properties.
