EU, U.S. At Odds As European Rules Allow Oil, Gas Trading With Iran
Brussels, Belgium (AHN) – In what could create differences between the Europe Union and the United States, the 27-nation bloc has issued fresh regulations that allow import and export of oil and gas to Iran.
“If you want to send a tanker filled with refined petrol to Iran, and you have proved that you are not carrying any other goods that we deem illegal, Europe has no problem,” said a European official. “We don’t want any negative effect on the Iranian population or to deprive them of energy, so we do not follow U.S. measures that go beyond United Nations sanctions,” he added.
The EU has also agreed to allow financial transactions required for import of oil and gas to Iran, unlike the U.S., which punishes companies over selling gasoline to Iran. Washington had also intensified pressure on international oil firms to scrap their deals with Iran.
The EU regulations also outline strict restrictions on transfer or sale of technology and equipment to the Iranian gas and oil industry.
However, the European regulations might not be practically effective since European oil giants might not supply fuel to Iran out of fear of possible U.S. sanctions against them.
The United Nations Security Council approved a fourth round of sanctions on Iran on June 9 over its refusal to halt its controversial nuclear program, which the West considers aimed at developing a nuclear bomb. However, Iran says it is only developing nuclear energy to meet the country’s growing energy needs.
