Survey: Pay Of British Executives Almost 200 Times Average Salary
London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Like bank executives, officials of FTSE 100 top companies enjoyed fat pay even while the rest of British workers continue to tighten their belts.
According to a study made by Incomes Data Services, the bonuses paid to the directors of FTSE 100 companies jumped by 34 percent, while basic pay grew by 3.6 percent. Overall, boardroom compensation went up by 55 percent.
Because of the hefty pay, the average FTSE 100 chief executive compensation is now $7.35 million (4.9 million pounds) a year, which is about 200 times the average wage.
Labor unions denounced the apparent greed of the executives while the rest of Britain copes with austerity measures imposed by the coalition government and suffer pay reductions or salary freezes.
British Business Secretary Vince Cable welcomed the report. Cable initiated a review of corporate behavior and compensation early this week. The review will study if the executive pay hike is linked to company performance.
Another survey by Incomes Data Services found out that 16 percent of British employers will still go ahead with plans to implement pay freezes.

Citi to raise CEO Pandit’s compensation next year
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Citigroup Inc. Chairman Richard Parsons said Friday that Chief Executive Vikram Pandit will be paid more next year because he’s done a good job leading the reorganization of the financial giant. Pandit told the bank’s board that he wouldn’t accept any extra compensation above his $1 salary for 2010, Citigroup said Friday. “The Board is very pleased with the progress that the management team is making in restoring Citi to profitability,” Parsons said in a statement. “Although we respect Vikram’s decision again to decline salary or an incentive award for 2010, we believe that his performance would merit a different outcome. He has worked tirelessly to put Citi back on the right track, spearheading a restructuring that has returned the company to profitability. Vikram’s decision is admirable but, beginning in 2011, the Board intends to compensate Vikram commensurate with the job of CEO of Citi.” In a Securities and Exchange filing, Citigroup said it will pay stock-based salary to Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach of $347,222 a month for 2010. Vice Chairman Edward Kelly will get stock-based salary of $500,000 a month in fiscal 2010. This stock salary will be paid for as long as Citi is subject to compensation rules laid out in the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.
