Unemployment Rate Rises To 9.8%, 15.1 Million Americans Jobless
Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Jobs recovery in the United States stalled in November with unemployment rising to 9.8 percent from 9.6 percent in October while the economy created only 39,000 jobs, Labor Department officials said Friday in the monthly report.
That jump in the unemployment rate came after it held steady at 9.6 percent for three months. The jobless rate has now hovered above 9 percent for 19 consecutive months, the longest period on record since 1948.
The percentage of working-age Americans who have either a part- or full-time job held steady at 64.5 percent.
Some 15.1 million Americans are unemployed. Another 2.5 million jobless Americans were not counted as unemployed; these are people who want and need a job and who have looked for work within the past 12 months, but were not counted as unemployed because they had not looked for work in the past four weeks because of school attendance or family responsibilities, according to the Bureau of Labor Department Statistics.
The number of discouraged workers who have stopped looking for work because they do not believe a job exists for them increased by 141,000 from a year earlier.
An additional 9 million Americans are involuntarily working part-time because their hours were cut or they cannot find full-time jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Department Statistics.
The plunge in job creation is in contrast to October when the economy created 172,000 jobs. Many analysts had expected the economy to create 130,000 or more jobs in November.
However, even that number would not be enough. The economy needs to create from 125,000 to 200,000 jobs per month just to supply people entering the labor market for the first time. Economists say putting people back to work who lost their jobs to the recession will require creating more than 200,000 jobs per month.
Payroll employment has increased by an average of only 86,000 monthly since the December 2009 lows, Commissioner of Bureau of Labor Statistics Keith Hall said in a statement Friday.
Unemployment rates for various groups were:
- Adult men — 10.0 percent
- Adult women — 8.4 percent
- Whites — 8.9 percent
- Hispanics — 13.2 percent
- Blacks — 16.0 percent
- Teenagers — 24.6 percent

Federal Reserve Reveals Names Of Firms That Availed Of Emergency Loan During Crisis
D.C., Washington, United States (AHN) – Over 21,000 transactions were made by the U.S. Federal Reserve when it stabilized the financial markets. Details of the transactions made in 2008 and 2009 were posted on the agency’s website upon order by Congress.
The details include names of companies that borrowed money and the amount.
Among the borrowers were:
- Citigroup $2.2 trillion,
- Merrill Lynch $2.1 trillion,
- Morgan Stanley $2 trillion and
- Bank of America $1.1 trillion.
The Fed also loaned to major American companies such as General Electric, AIG, Caterpillar, Verizon, Harley-Davidson and Toyota.
The loans also extended to subsidiaries of U.S. banks in East Asia, Europe and Canada and to large foreign banks such as Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland, Deutsche Bank and UBS.
The bulk of the loans were made in the fall of 2008 when the Fed lowered lending benchmarks and extended help to different institutions that never sought assistance from the U.S. central bank before the crisis.
The Fed said most of the loans have been paid back, and none are overdue.
Last month the Fed announced the availability of $600 billion stimulus money. The announcement sparked complaints that the agency was stoking inflation and asset-price bubbles.

More Home Seekers Saying “Don’t Supersize Me”
New York, NY, United States (AHN) – McMansions are rapidly becoming the housing equivalent of persona non grata as more Americans are opting for smaller residential footprints.
A new consumer lifestyle survey commissioned by Relocation.com found that 48 percent of the respondents indicated that their ideal home size would range from 1,000 to 1,999 square feet, while 29 percent prefer homes that are 2,000 to 2,999 square feet.
However, five years ago the average home’s square footage was 2,400 square feet, nearly 400 square feet bigger than what many home buyers desire today.
Additionally, the survey found that many Americans still desire the suburban lifestyle. About 54 percent prefer living near a city but away from the “hustle and bustle.” Urban and rural neighborhood settings were only preferred by 24 percent and 22 percent, respectively, of survey participants.
“We’re definitely seeing more Americans downsizing due to the current state of the economy,” said Relocation.com chairman and founder Sharon Asher. “But as more homeowners rethink how much space they need, I think we’ll continue to see more innovative approaches to living well and sustainably within a smaller footprint.”
The survey revealed that cost of a residence is not the main deciding factor when purchasing a home. Only 29 percent of respondents stated living costs as the most important factor when considering a move.

Kraft Foods Initiating Arbitration To Prevent Starbucks From Ending Partnership
Northfield, IL, United States (AHN) – Kraft Foods Inc. is fighting an attempt to end a partnership arrangement the two have been in for more than a decade. Kraft announced Monday that it initiated an arbitration proceeding to challenge Starbucks Coffee Co.’s attempt to put a halt to their retail grocery coffee business.
Kraft Foods has successfully built the Starbucks retail grocery component to the coffee maker’s business.
In 1998 Kraft and Starbucks entered into a retail grocery coffee business, which at the time was generating less than $50 million in annual revenues. Since then, the business has grown to approximately $500 million in annual revenues.
According to Kraft, under the terms of the deal Starbucks could take over the business in order to pursue a different arrangement. However, Kraft says it needs sufficient time to execute an orderly transition. Kraft said Starbucks must compensate it for the fair market value of the business plus a premium of up to 35 percent of that value.
“Starbucks unilaterally and unjustifiably declared in public statements the agreement’s termination, needlessly risking confusion among customers about the agreement’s status,” said Marc Firestone, executive vice president and general counsel.
He added, “In effect, Starbucks is trying to walk away from a 12-year strategic partnership, from which it has greatly benefited, without abiding by contractual conditions. Kraft reasonably expected Starbucks to honor the contract. We are confident in our position and look forward to presenting the facts before the arbitrator.”
Until the matter is resolved, Kraft is continuing to conduct business as usual.

Monday Watercooler: Palin lies about daughter’s use of gay slur
Dr. Laura will return. First Amendment “scholar” Dr. Laura Schlessinger [1] will join XM radio early next year (another reason not to buy the service). A few months back she got in hot water due to a “philosophical p [2]oint” [3] about the word nigger, and not marrying outside your race if you have no sense of humor about being called racial epithets by a spouse’s friends. [4] Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell works and is not a problem. Sen. John McCain [5]is really into kissing the ring of social conservatives. He told CNN yesterday that DADT is just fine, and the push for repeal is “a political promise made by an inexperienced president or candidate for president of the United States.” McCain likes his grapes sour, with dash of bitter. Lindsey Graham [6], the Republican senator from South Carolina, is certain the GOP will stand firm to block any repeal. “I don’t believe there’s anywhere near the votes to repeal ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ on the Republican side,” Graham said. “I think we’ll be united in lame duck.” [7] DADT week. The military policy will be above the fold all this week. Tomorrow the Defense Department’s report [8] will be released; on December 2 and 3 the Senate Armed Services Committee [9] will hold hearings about the study’s findings. Servicemembers Legal Defense Network [10] released a list of senators who repeal supporters need to call now: Harry Reid (D-NV); Susan Collins (R-ME); Olympia Snowe (R-ME); Mark Pryor (D-AR.); Blanche Lincoln (D-AR); Richard Lugar (R-IN); Judd Gregg (R-NH); Scott Brown (R-MA); George Voinovich (R-OH); Kit Bond (R-MO); Joe Manchin (D-WV); Lisa Murkowski (R-AK); Mark Kirk (R-IL); and James Webb (D-VA). Get on the phone peoples. [11] Miller wants to return to West Point. If Dixiecrats Graham and McCain hold sway, former cadet Katherine Miller [12] won’t ever be in the military. The reluctant activist has her reapplication ready if the policy is removed. Her case proves why DADT had to go years ago. [13] All that gay booty you had over the weekend is nasty…at least according to the Pope. In more dog bites man news, Pope Benedict XVI [14] repeats gay loving is “intrinsically disordered.” However, I’m going to give the pontiff a little credit here. While he thinks the gay is a cross and all, he doesn’t believe in discrimination. Sure that’s a low bar and his rhetoric is not helpful for gay kids growing up in the Church, but here is a question all minority groups must answer. Do we want love and respect from the majority or to be left alone? I’m in the left alone column. [15] Any crazy Thanksgiving stories? My weekend was quiet. Yours? [16] RIP Leslie Nielsen [17]. [18] When it comes to Obama, Fox News readers have never heard of the Onion. And are deranged. Can’t wait to see how Fox News talkies deal with this, if they even do. Fox Nation.com [19] re-posted an article about Barack Obama sending out a rambling 75,000 word email. The piece was taken from the Onion [20], masters of fake news. Apparently Fox acolytes are unfamiliar with the publication because many left comments oblivious they were opining on something satirical. Don’t go looking for the post because Fox Nation editors took it down. Wonder why? [21] Sarah Palin is forgetful with the truth. Remember the recent Palin Facebook drama? Sixteen year old Willow Palin [22] called someone a faggot. In Mama Palin’s [23] version, her child used a “bad word” only after being provoked by “very, very hateful things about the family and….mean things about her little brother Trig.” This would be a great story if it were related to the true. The youngest Palin was never mentioned in the Facebook conversation; the gay slur was typed after someone offered a mild critique of Palin’s reality show. In the world/mind of Palin not liking her show equals saying “hateful things.” By the way, I’ll grant her point about leaving her kids be. Black Friday shows slight increase
Black Friday, the official start of the holiday shopping season in the United States, showed a 2.2-percent boost in the number of shoppers going to the malls. |||
Washington – Black Friday, the official start of the holiday shopping season in the United States, showed a 2.2-percent boost in the number of shoppers going to the malls, according to early estimates Saturday.
But the estimates showed only a 0.3-percent increase in spending.
The company ShopperTrak, which monitors the sales said retail sales increased 0.3 percent on last year with consumers spending 10.69 billion dollars in various retail locations.
Comparatively, sales on Black Friday 2009 increased 0.5 percent versus Black Friday 2008, with 10.66 billion dollars spent.
“This means the American shopper has adapted to the economic climate over the last couple of years and is possibly spending more wisely as the holiday season begins,” said ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin.
Many retailers pushed consumers to their websites with various online only sales, which most likely had also influenced Black Friday performance, he added.
This tendency was confirmed by PayPal, an online payment service, which reported approximately a 27-percent increase in total payment volume on Black Friday 2010, compared to the previous year.
“The tough economy has made shoppers more price-conscious, and this year’s Black Friday results show that they’re going online to find the best deals,” said Amanda Pires, senior director at PayPal.
“With the convenience of shopping from a laptop or mobile phone, more people are choosing to avoid the long lines, parking chaos and early morning rush in exchange for great online deals available from the comfort of their homes,” she added. – Sapa-AFP

Fed-Ex Searching For Missing Radioactive Package
Knoxville, TN, United States (AHN) – FedEx officials are searching for a package containing radioactive material that went missing on Thursday.
Although company officials put all FedEx facilities on alert, they are focusing the main search in the Tennessee area. FedEx reassured the public that as long as the protective packaging is intact there is no danger.
The package containing radioactive rods was enroute from a supplier in North Dakota to a person in Knoxville who uses the material in medical equipment. The radioactive rods were in cylinders that are used in hospital machinery for quality control calibration.
Two FedEx employees who handled the shipment return to work on Friday and company officials hope to learn more from them.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission notified the other appropriate government agencies, including the FBI, CDC, EPA and Department of Homeland Security.

Personal Loans When You Have Subprime Credit In Your Report
Many lenders will give you money although you have less than stellar credit. But there are some rules you need to follow before getting a personal loan for poor credit. One of the issues you’re facing when it comes to getting a loan with bad credit is that the vast majority of people in the United States have goodor excellent credit. You have to go up against these folks for the cash they have available to loan. This is not impossible of course but if you have bad credit, your job is going to be harder. The Familiar Story You begin college with your first credit cards in hand not really understanding the pitfalls that overspending can cause. You use your cards whenever you have to to get the necessary things for school like expenses. Over time, those few little extra expenses that don’t seem like much add up. These are the ones for entertainment and social things that you may want to avoid but your credit cards make them easy to buy without thinking about it.
You may even get two or three more credit cards as time goes by to keep up with your lifestyle. By the end of College you wind up with not only student loan debt but also the big credit card obligations. The job you are able to get is not quite as high paying as you thought it would be and you have to choose between meeting your needs and making payments. Eventually, your credit score and report starts to head downhill. All of a sudden you need to borrow. But, instead of being able to get top tier rates, you end up having to get a loan for poor credit. These costs associated with these are always higher and banks are going to be a bit more wary of you as a borrower. Some Things You Can Do To Improve Your Chances Add a Co-Signer – This can be an a fast solution, especially if that person has a solid credit history. Talk to SpecializedBanks – Find good listings of banks who specialize in people with credit issues. There are fewer of these currently but they are out there. Take Steps To Fix Your Credit Report – You should be doing this anyway but taking action now to fix your credit can look better to potential lenders.
