Ashgabat, Turkmenistan (AHN) – European countries no longer have to worry about uncertain natural gas supplies a Turkmenistan government official said Friday.

Deputy Prime Minister Baymyrad Hojamuhamedov said it would supply natural gas for the planned Nabucco pipeline. He said Turkmenistan would have up to 1,412 billion cubic feet of spare gas annually. The Nabucco pipeline means EU countries can rely less on Russia for natural gas in the future.

Construction of the planned Nabucco pipeline has been delayed because of uncertainty over where its supply of gas would come from.

The proposed pipeline will run 2,046 miles and transport natural gas from the Caspian region and the Middle East across Turkey and into Europe.

Turkmenistan already sells natural gas to Iran, China and Russia, while Europe was relying primarily on Russia for supplies. However, a row last year between the Ukraine and Russia over an unpaid bill left Europe worried that its supplies could be disrupted if Russia cut supplies to Ukraine because the existing pipeline goes through the Ukraine.
