U.S. offers support to Myanmar’s reforms during historic visit

Naypyitaw, Myanmar (AHN) – United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday reached the long-isolated nation of Myanmar for a three-day historic visit.
The visit is aimed at upgrading diplomatic ties, appraising progress, revitalizing political reforms, boosting aid and providing a road map for strengthening relations with the U.S. and the European Union.
During her visit, Clinton offered active support to the Mynamarese government for its reforms and asked Myanmar to halt its relations with North Korea with which it is considering buying missile technology.
The Secretary of State also called for release of all remaining political prisoners and a halt to violence.
In a meeting with President Thein Sein in Naypyitaw, Clinton said, “I am here today because President Obama and myself are encouraged by the steps you and your government have taken to provide for your people.”
That prompted Sein to describe the visit as a “historic milestone.” He also expressed hope that the visit could lead to “enhanced relations and cooperation.”
On Thursday, Clinton met parliamentary leaders, foreign minister and senior government officials. “In each of my meetings, leaders assured me that progress would continue and broaden. And as it does, America will actively support those, inside and outside government, who genuinely seek reform,” she said at a news conference.
In November last year, Myanmar held historic elections during which the military-ruled government handed over power to the new government – something which had long been described as a sham by western observers.
A month later, Myanmar released pro-democracy icon Aung Sang Suu Kyi and several other political prisoners. It also eased media and Internet restrictions and legalized banned political parties.
Although Washington is not considering lifting sanctions on Myanmar in the near future, Clinton hinted the U.S. might allow the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and a few other missions inside the Southeast Asian nation.
The Secretary also proposed to start joint counter-narcotics operations with the government of Myanmar. “These are beginning steps, and we are prepared to go even further if reforms maintain momentum,” she said.
